A Seat at the Table, Again
“I’m so relieved.”
“NIMA made a huge difference in my celiac journey.”
“Finally, I can get my life back.”
Those were some of the first messages we received when people learned NIMA was returning.
They weren’t comments about a device. They were expressions of renewed hope. For people living with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, everyday moments that many take for granted can quietly disappear: dinner with friends, travel without anxiety, saying yes to an invitation to eat at a friend’s without packing a backup meal. When NIMA went away, many felt that loss acutely.
So when we say “NIMA is back”, we mean this: the access, confidence, and belonging NIMA powers are back. And this time, we’re here to stay.
A New Chapter, Built to Endure
The NIMA Gluten Sensor isn’t simply available for purchase again. It has been rebuilt from the ground up, with stronger engineering, improved manufacturing systems, and independent scientific validation to ensure long-term reliability.
The next-generation system detects gluten from wheat, barley, and rye at levels as low as 10 parts per million, with 99% accuracy. That performance was validated by BIA Diagnostics, a globally recognized allergen-testing laboratory whose work is trusted by the celiac community and organizations such as Gluten Free Watchdog.
We also made meaningful hardware upgrades: an enhanced internal camera and LED illumination for improved sensitivity, USB-C charging, and extended battery life that supports up to 40 tests per charge. And through the updated NIMA Now™ mobile app, users can log results and contribute to a growing, community-powered database of gluten-free insights—helping others navigate shared kitchens, travel, and dining out with more confidence and less concern.
Why Inclusion Matters as Much as Accuracy
As important as performance is, it’s not the whole story.
From day one of this relaunch, we’ve been clear: NIMA is not just about testing food.
It’s about restoring trust.
Reclaiming joy.
Rejoining moments.
For many people living with celiac disease or gluten intolerance, certain life moments happen at a distance.
We see the newly diagnosed, overwhelmed and searching for answers and belonging.
We see the lifelong self-advocates carrying the weight of vigilance.
We see the caretakers protecting the people they love.
Meals become calculations.
Invitations become concerns.
A simple question, “Is this safe?” follows every choice.
What once felt effortless now requires vigilance and trust in a world that isn’t always careful or clear.
We’re here for all of you, because we believe no one should have to step back from life because of what’s on their plate.
Our purpose is simple: to welcome you back to the table.
A New Foundation: The Story Behind the Return
All of that is why this moment matters. And it’s also why our history matters. NIMA’s story isn’t a straight line—it’s a human one, shaped by the community that depended on it and by the people who refused to let it disappear.
The original sensor, developed in 2013 by two MIT graduates navigating food sensitivities themselves, proved that lab-grade gluten testing could live in a pocket, not a laboratory. The technology quickly earned the trust of the gluten-free community and eventually became part of Medline Industries.
During the pandemic, global supply-chain disruptions made continued manufacturing impossible. The device didn’t lose relevance, it lost availability. That moment clarified what NIMA truly represented and what it would take to build it for the long term.
In 2025, Peter Kolchinsky, founder and managing partner of RA Capital Management, stepped in with a clear conviction shaped by personal experience. As a parent of a child with celiac disease, he understood that reliability isn’t a feature, it’s the foundation.
“What NIMA really gives people is trust in the food they are eating or feeding their kids,” said Kolchinsky. “When the thing you’re worried about is invisible, trust is hard to come by. That’s true for families like mine—and it’s true for anyone living with celiac disease. NIMA helps establish trust where it matters by making the invisible visible. We don't have to worry as long as we have our NIMA.”
Reviving NIMA wasn’t about restoring a familiar product. It meant rebuilding the system end to end—updating the technology, strengthening manufacturing, and implementing quality processes designed for consistency and scale. The goal was durability and improved sensitivity, not a short-term return.
That work is why this relaunch is different. It isn’t a restart. It’s a new foundation, built to ensure NIMA can be trusted, available, and dependable for the long term.
NIMA’s return marks a new chapter grounded in science, transparency, and community. Whether you're protecting a child, supporting a loved one, or advocating for yourself, you deserve a seat at the table—without fear, without second-guessing, and without being left out.
We’re honored to be part of that journey again.
